Why the Church Cares

At the OSJ, we are hearing both arguments for and against defunding Planned Parenthood recently. Pro-life people are not in agreement over whether defunding it is the answer. So we are hosting a point-counterpoint set of articles--one CRC member writing for defunding the organization, and another writing against defunding it.

She had also just come from work. She was dressed in a professional pant-suit. I gave her the instructions for the pregnancy test, and once that was taken care of, she sat down and explained her situation to me.

I find these debates which claim the authority of Abraham Kuyper for keeping the institutional church out of social issues unfortunate. Not unfortunate because we don’t need serious debate – we do!

May we work towards equitable relationships. And may we join our many First Nations sisters and brothers in stumbling heavenward, together.  

It is a letter that brings substantial hope as it bridges across both all creation and human society, inspiring everyone to envision an “integral ecology” for which creation and human society have been waiting in eager expectation.

This history is our history. It shapes who we were, who we are, and who we will become. Let us take this opportunity to shape our future for the good.

As I have had the privilege of working in First Nations communities and developing relationships with my Indigenous friends and neighbours, I have been able to learn much about the world through the teachings of the Medicine Wheel.

What if you didn’t know your work schedule for next week? What if you didn’t know when you would be getting your paycheck? What if you couldn’t predict the things that affect your life so dearly? It would be hard, frustrating, and even scary. Unfortunately, something similar is happening in Kenya.
