Our Cloud of Witnesses

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” (Hebrews 12:1-2a)

We follow in the steps of many Christian Reformed justice-seekers who have gone before us, faithful Christians who have lived out the radical call of the Gospel, empowered by the Holy Spirit.

Who is in your cloud of witnesses? Who inspires you to “run with perseverance the race marked out for us”? Maybe it’s your grandfather, who faithfully writes letters to people in prison. Maybe it’s an older mentor, who encouraged you and provoked your thinking when you were just beginning to sense that following Christ had to include standing with those who are marginalized. Maybe it’s a friend who first encouraged you to contact your elected representative about a justice issue. Maybe it’s someone you haven’t even met, but whose faithful justice leadership has inspired you.

Like the writer of Hebrews, let’s remember our cloud of witnesses and be encouraged for the race ahead of us.
