Justice Prayers - September 1st, 2021

I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. - Psalm 16:8

Continuing prayers for Afghanistan as last American soldiers leave the country

Lord, we ask that your spirit would not leave this land. We pray against any powers and principalities that would dehumanize and diminish your creation in Afghanistan and we pray for  life grow.  We pray for pathways to peace in every family, neighborhood and city during this chaotic moment in this country.

And as we pray this for Afghanistan, keep us who are far away from judgement, open hearts to empathy and lead us all to the humility needed for peace.

Hurricane Ida leaves millions without power and extensive damage.

Lord as residents in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi take stock of damage caused by Hurricane Ida, we pray for safety during power outages. We pray for neighbors to take care of one another, to remember one another and that the most vulnerable would find help.  We ask that your hand would clear supply lines, rescue, recovery and clean-up efforts and that all levels of government would cooperate to restore these neighborhoods. In your name.’

Caldor Wildfire

The Caldor wildfire reached Lake Tahoe Basin, forcing over 20,000 residents to flee.  As with so many fires across the continent in these last few years, the fire is unpredictable and usual efforts are not working in the same way to contain them.

Lord,

For those in harm’s way we pray for your protection and we pray for evacuation routes to be clear.  We pray for those who are fighting these fires – for wisdom and for your Spirit to sustain them.  And we pray for the forests to heal and for new life to begin from the ground alongside the humility to learn what is needed to live well with the forests in these days.

As climate disasters increase in number and scale, it is more important than ever to pass bold climate legislation to preserve and protect the environment. Urge your Senators to vote in favor of measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase spending to replace outdated infrastructure, and recognize that the climate crisis is an extreme emergency and the filibuster must not stand in the way of bold and courageous climate legislation.
