The power of profits taking precedence over real world consequences is being further revealed in The Facebook Papers. While this might seem like a strange prayer for a Do Justice, the reach these companies have in shaping the narratives and opinions of citizens is overwhelmingly large. Polarization, mistrust and anger were exploited to create more revenue for the company and we as citizens of our countries and of God’s kingdom know that this has reaches into us living with justice and righteousness in our communities. So we pray:
Lord, we have made, shaped, benefitted from these products. And they are increasingly at odds with a flourishing society. God give us wisdom and greater compassion as we learn to avoid polarization, mistrust and anger in order to be a better salt and light in the world that you've call us to be.
Military coup in Sudan
Military forces arrested Sudan’s interim Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and other senior officials early on Monday morning. The leader of the takeover, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, dissolved the military-civilian Sovereign Council that had been set up to guide the country to democracy following the overthrow of long time leader Omar al-Bashir in a popular uprising two years ago. Countries have called for the restoration of civilian led governments as the country moves towards a full democracy. The US has suspended over $700 million in economic aid.
Lord in the upheaval of power and politics, and in the transition to citizen led governments, we pray for peace and for the welfare of Sudan’s people. Protect for the vulnerable women, children and protect a society’s vital services such as food production and medical care. We pray for peaceful resolution to already deadly upheaval.
The UN Environment Programme releases an Emissions Gap report
The plans of individual nations to cut carbon fall far short of what's needed to avert dangerous climate change, according to the UN Environment Programme. Their Emissions Gap report shows that country pledges will fail to keep the global temperature under 1.5C this century and suggests the world is on course to warm around 2.7C with hugely destructive impacts.
We pray for these consequences of the emissions gap to be made clear to the decision makers and industry leaders in every country who has pledged action and for those who have not. We live by your grace, so we pray for the grace to find the ways to net zero in these next few years.
As the world leaders gather in Glasgow next week, we pray for the preparation, will and resolve to honor God’s creation. Direct key leader’s thoughts and hearts to prioritizing a sustainable future with our earth. We pray for populations to realize what is at stake, By your Holy Spirit. And we pray for the grace of truly good policies and real solutions as whole economies need to change – policies that will go far past the plans for photo ops.
As a new faces in the federal government take up their new roles, we pray for justness and wisdom in their mandates.
King of Kings as Canadian leaders take up new positions we pray that your wisdom would rule their hearts and minds. We pray for efficient transitions, and good flow of information. We pray for good fruit in the offices of policy makers and narrative shapers.
