A cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon took effect Wednesday, ending the deadliest conflict in decades. Announced by President Biden and approved by Israel, the agreement follows Israeli airstrikes on Beirut and Hezbollah-dominated areas. The deal relies on the United Nations Interim Peacekeeping Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which includes 10,000 personnel from 50 countries. UNIFIL will monitor and enforce the truce, based on a 2006 framework that ended the last major war between Israel and Hezbollah.

At COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, negotiators agreed to triple annual climate finance for developing countries, aiming for $300 billion by 2035. This falls short of the $1.3 trillion experts say is needed for clean energy transitions and to limit global warming to 1.5°C. Developing nations criticized the deal as insufficient and chaotic, while wealthier countries faced accusations of unmet commitments. The agreement, non-binding and reliant on private and international funding, highlights ongoing divisions over financial responsibilities in addressing climate change.

A report commissioned by the Assembly of First Nations highlights that closing the First Nations infrastructure gap by 2030 could generate $635 billion in economic output, adding $1.82 to Canada’s economy for every dollar invested. Addressing decades of underfunding across housing, roads, water, schools, and more will cost $349 billion but create 338,300 jobs annually, boosting GDP and workforce participation. Delayed investment could escalate costs to $527 billion by 2040.

Amid escalating gang violence in Haiti, the U.N. and international organizations are reducing their presence in Port-au-Prince, with evacuations and suspended operations. The capital's airport remains closed after gangs targeted U.S. airliners. Many Haitians fear abandonment, as gang attacks displace tens of thousands. A Kenyan-led security mission faces criticism for its limited impact. Despite challenges, the U.N. pledges ongoing humanitarian support, feeding 40,000 daily. Critics argue that international withdrawals deepen Haiti’s crisis, leaving its government overwhelmed and its people vulnerable.
We lift up Haiti in prayer during this time of turmoil. Protect those affected by violence, and bring safety and stability to their communities. Strengthen leaders to act with courage and compassion, and empower the international community to support Haiti with integrity and resolve. May hope and healing prevail over fear and despair.
