Justice Prayers - April 24, 2024

We remember that the Earth is the Lord’s and everything in it - including us and our choices.

“The poor and needy search for water,
    but there is none;
    their tongues are parched with thirst.
But I the Lord will answer them;
    I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.
I will make rivers flow on barren heights,
    and springs within the valleys.
I will turn the desert into pools of water,
    and the parched ground into springs.”
- Isaiah 41: 17, 18

Alberta Water Sharing Agreements

Drought conditions continue and are anticipated in southern Alberta and so municipalities, industry and irrigation have all chose to agree to lessen their water use so that what water there is can be shared. The process reportedly was collaborative with stakeholders choosing to compromise so that everyone benefits. We pray this attitude towards navigating the consequences of the climate crisis continues.

You are the source of all life and the living water we need.

We live with the consequences of sin and short-sightedness. We are experiencing natural consequences of climate change, land usage choices. But we also live in a world of grace. We pray for your mercy to work among us that we might continue to work well together, finding solutions for the long haul. May goodwill, grace and generosity continue to be what marks our steps even in times of crisis. Provide water in the desert, God of Mercy.

First Nations Water Crisis: some progress made but more is needed

As of March 22, 2024, according to a Federal government website, First Nations have successfully lifted 144 long-term drinking water advisories with support from Indigenous Services Canada since November 2015. Comprehensive action plans are in place in 26 communities, targeting the resolution of 28 active, long-term advisories. The progress was acknowledged by Economist Pedro Arrojo-Agudo, United Nations special rapporteur on the right to drinking water and sanitation, but he also named how far Canada has to go to deliver on the basic human right to drinking water for all its people.  In particular, he said using the term "drinking water advisories" to describe the long-term non-availability of safe drinking water in First Nations communities is concerning.

We continue to pray for the right to drink clean water to be extended to every person in Canada.

Lord of all Creation, the design of the water system is incredible. Water is a resource many of us take for granted. And yet we forced people to live in places without clean water and didn’t provide the resources to treat it. May your liberating spirit be in the process of remediating this sin. Clean the water and clean our hearts as we continue to restore the availability of clean water. Provide water in this desert, God of mercy.

Morocco’s Drinking Water Shortage

Morocco’s drinking water system has faltered in recent years of severe drought. Plans to bring 8 more desalination plants which turn brackish water (not fresh water but not as salty as saltwater either) into drinking water into the water and energy systems have been approved. The desalination process results in hot brine with toxic levels of chemicals in it and is very energy intensive. We pray for systems around the world trying to find solutions for water shortages.

We ask for wisdom for Morocco and places like it that need to find solutions to a lack of water. We pray for sustainable solutions that do not exacerbate other problems like fossil fuel use and environmental pollutants. May this technology quench a people’s thirst but also, may you direct our hearts to solutions that honor your creation. Lord, provide water in the desert, God of mercy.

We pray for all cities and populations facing water shortage crisis - Johannesburg, Bogota, Sicily, Beijing, Mexico City and more. We pray for softening of hearts, lessening of fear and good legislation to help the world share, conserve and not waste the resource every being needs to survive.
