Former President Safe After What F.B.I. Describes as an Assassination Attempt

Former President Donald J. Trump was playing golf on Sunday afternoon in Florida when a Secret Service agent spotted a man with a rifle standing by a chain-link fence on the perimeter of the course, law enforcement officials said. The agents opened fire, and the man fled in a black Nissan but was eventually taken into custody, the officials said. While Mr. Trump was safe and unharmed, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said it was investigating the episode as an apparent attempted assassination, the second one against the former president in just over two months. Mr. Trump was wounded in a previous attempt during a July 13 rally in Butler, Pa.

The suspected gunman was identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, of Hawaii.

God, we pray for the safety of our leaders, and we denounce violence as the solution to political problems. Beyond this individual event, Lord, we are fearful for this slowly escalating trend in violence and non-democratic methods of acquiring power. We pray for leaders to be leaders right now and save us from this path towards destruction.

India to add record renewables this year as green push gains momentum, despite continued growth of coal

India will connect a record 35 gigawatts (GW) of solar and wind energy capacity to its grid during the year ending March 2025, a top bureaucrat told Reuters, as it scrambles to achieve its 2030 clean energy target after falling short of a much publicized 2022 renewables goal.

The world's fastest growing major economy has prioritized coal to address a surge in power demand in recent years, with growth in coal-fired power output expected to outpace renewable energy generation this year. The south Asian nation will need to add about 30% more clean capacity every year than the expected wind and solar additions this fiscal year to achieve its end-2030 target of increasing its non-fossil power capacity to 500 GW, underscoring the challenges in meeting its clean energy goals. Renewable energy minister Prahlad Joshi said financial institutions have pledged to provide $386 billion in funding for renewable projects by 2030, adding that clean energy developers have committed to boost India's non-fossil capacity by 570 GW.

We pray for clean energy in abundance, to meet the needs of each and every one of your children while living in harmonious relationship with the created world. We pray for political will, funding, and thoughtfulness as clean energy projects are rolled out around the world.

'A lost opportunity': Alberta gives back $137M to Ottawa in unspent funds to clean up inactive wells

The Alberta government has officially handed back more than $137 million to the federal government after running out of time to spend the cash to clean up old oil and natural gas wells.

Questions remain about why the provincial government was unable to use the much-needed funding, considering there are tens of thousands of inactive wells.  Many companies are also disappointed that the full amount wasn't spent because of the loss of reclamation work it would have created. The cash was part of the federal government's $1.7-billion funding pledge in 2020 aimed at reducing the environmental risk of aging oil and gas infrastructure, while also providing work for the oilfield service sector after the pandemic began and oil prices crashed. The money was divided between B.C. ($120 million), Alberta ($1 billion) and Saskatchewan ($400 million). Alberta's Orphan Well Association received a $200-million loan to support the cleanup of wells left over when companies go bankrupt.

God, we pray for the clean up of inactive oil and gas wells. We pray for wisdom and guidance in the stewardship of resources meant to restore our environment. May those in leadership act with urgency and clarity, ensuring funds are used effectively. We pray for the earth. Lord, help us act for the good of future generations, your waters, and all your creatures.

Israel sets new war goal, adding to signs of escalation with Hezbollah

Israel has a new war goal, adding to mounting signs that the conflict could soon expand to the country's north as it warned the U.S. that “military action” would likely be the only way to address mounting hostilities with Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah. With fears of a broader regional war growing, Israel's internal security agency, or Shin Bet, said Tuesday it had thwarted a Hezbollah plot to kill a former senior official in the Israeli security establishment. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office announced late Monday that the security cabinet had updated its list of war objectives to include the safe return of residents who have been displaced from their homes near Israel's northern border with Lebanon due to months of fighting with Hezbollah. "Israel will continue to act to implement this objective," the prime minister's office said.

God, we need this to stop immediately. We mourn bombs dropping, children perishing, and generations being destroyed. What do we have to do to get this to stop? Guide us in marches, writing letters, and supporting those working for peace.  Intervene, O God.
